What the shading means on the map

Zone AE

High-risk with BFE

1% annual chance flood (the 100-year floodplain). Base Flood Elevations are defined. Mandatory flood insurance if federally backed mortgage.

Zone A

High-risk, no BFE

1% annual chance flood without detailed study. Base Flood Elevation not determined. Same insurance requirements as AE.

Zone VE

Coastal high-hazard

Coastal areas exposed to wave action. Building codes require elevation on pilings and additional structural requirements.

Zone X (shaded)

Moderate risk

0.2% annual chance flood (the 500-year floodplain), or areas protected by levees. Insurance optional but recommended.

Zone X

Minimal risk

Above the 500-year floodplain. Low risk, but flash floods can occur anywhere in Hawai‘i.

Flood safety reminders

Flash floods in Hawai‘i can develop in minutes

Turn around, don’t drown

6 inches of moving water can knock you down. 12 inches can float most vehicles.

Never drive through flooded roads

Water may be deeper than it looks and the road underneath may be washed out.

Elevate utilities

Move furnaces, water heaters, and electrical panels above expected flood levels.

Flood insurance is separate

Standard homeowners policies don’t cover floods. NFIP policies take 30 days to activate.
